One Wednesday night in March 2020, I received a phone call from a good friend of mine who was clearly distressed. He told me that his 5 week-old niece, Elle, who lives in Zimbabwe, had been on life support for five days and was scheduled for an urgent and life-saving open heart surgery in Johannesburg the following day. Even though they had already booked a charter plane, the biggest challenge was that, despite countless emails and phone calls to the South African Home Affairs office, they could not get the necessary permission to land and get off the plane once at Johannesburg airport. So I called Smutby Dylan Mackenzie who immediately put me in touch with JHB Smutby Sparkly Kagiso Mokgosi who, as she does, stepped up immediately and after many phones calls, made the Smutby magic happen – and Elle was whisked off the plane and rushed to hospital.
Elle had a successful operation which saved her life!. Elle has now been discharged from hospital and she is recovering – and looks healthy and happy. If it were not for the power of the Smutby clan, our little angel may not have made it”.
We have something rather special in this group and I, for one, am proud to be a Smutby.
